A detainee custody officer plays a vital part in securing the UK Borders. Their role encompasses a wide range of duties at a wide range of locations including airports, ports and removal centres.
What is the role of a DCO?
DCO’s work with a variety of people including immigration staff, police, social services and members of the public. DCO’s escort detainees to locations specified by the UK Border Agency and are responsible for the security and welfare of the individual/s that are being detained. Driving is a large part of the job – as the role requires transporting detainees – as well as administering first aid and writing reports.
The challenges of the role!
DCO’s have to be able to adapt to a vast array of situations and then act upon them. Detainees can sometimes be distressed, abusive, aggressive and violent and physical restraint may be required at times. It is important for DCO’s to remain non-judgemental and to follow the correct procedures when handling detainees.
Eligibility to work as a DCO
Due to the nature of the job, a number of background checks need to be carried out. These include a 5 year employment history check, a credit and fraud check, counter terrorist clearance and an enhanced criminal records check. The role is exempt from the rehabilitation of offenders act 1974 and candidates applying for the role are required to specify ANY criminal convictions, spent or unspent, cautions or reprimands. DCO’s also need to be in possession of a full manual driving licence.
